Re-link a moved or missing file

Rooster reads your recordings where they are rather than copying them. So if you move, rename or delete one, a project that uses it can no longer find it.

When a file is missing

Opening the project shows a banner over the editor, such as "One of this project's files isn't where the project expects it", listing each file, whether it is used on the timeline, and where it was last seen.

  • If Rooster has found the file in its new place, the row says where and offers Relink. Press it.
  • Otherwise press Locate… and choose the file - the same one, or a replacement - then press Relink in the panel.

The banner goes away once every file is found.

What Rooster checks

A replacement must be the same kind of file - video for video, audio for audio, an image for an image - and at least as long as the part of it the timeline plays. If not, Rooster says what is wrong and changes nothing. If you choose the file the project already uses, it says so.

The banner also appears for a file that is now shorter than the project expects - one that was trimmed in another app, say.

A file put back, or replaced in place

If you put a file back where it was, or replaced it at the same location - with a re-encoded copy, say - add it again with Add in the Media rail or File > Add Media…. Rooster refreshes the project's link to it instead of adding a second copy, and says so. A file added from a new location is a new file to Rooster; use the banner to relink a moved one.

Avoid it

Keep recordings and imported files where they were while you are still editing a project that uses them. Recordings made in Rooster go to Downloads > Rooster unless you chose another folder.
