Where the time goes

• The meter

  Recording several takes is how a good talking-head video gets made, and a per-minute allowance charges for the takes you throw away as readily as the one you keep. Metered tiers also meter the cleanup: removing filler words in Descript is a cloud call that spends AI credits, which is a strange thing to ration.

• The upload

  Nothing can start until the footage has arrived somewhere else. On a slow connection, or on a train, or in a hotel, the edit simply does not begin - and the raw takes going up are the ones you specifically recorded in order to delete.

• The timeline

  Finding a fluffed line on a waveform means scrubbing until you hear it. Reading it in a transcript takes a second, which is the whole reason this category of editor exists.

  Camera, screen, or screen with camera, with device, resolution and aspect-ratio pickers, framing guides and a countdown. The teleprompter has presentation controls and sits beside the record button, so a scripted piece does not need a second device propped against the monitor.

  An NVIDIA Parakeet speech model starts on your Mac when recording stops. Choose another local engine or connect your own transcription service when you need one.

• Transcript editing

  Click a word to seek. Select the sentence you fluffed and the header shows its word count and its measured duration in timeline time, so it counts what an export would keep rather than what the transcript says. Delete ripples the cut across every track as one undoable edit; Correct fixes text without touching the media.

• Captions

  Four presets, previewed on the canvas as you pick one and burned into the exported video through the same composition path the preview uses. SRT and VTT come from the same cues.

• Eye Contact and Green Screen

  Eye Contact is a local beta built on Apple Vision pupil tracking, with A/B playback so you can see what it changed. Green Screen does background blur, studio backgrounds, chroma green and custom images with edge controls. Both render on the Mac, which costs time rather than credits: a five-second render of 1080p60 took about 14 seconds on an M-series Mac.

• Export

  Export a finished video ready to upload, with captions on the picture or in a separate file. The render happens on your Mac and lands in Downloads.

• Filler-word removal and retake detection

  Remove filler words lists every hesitation with the words either side and a play button, and cuts the ones you approve as a single undoable ripple - on your Mac, at no per-use cost. Retake detection is the next tool of this kind to be written, and it is held to the rule this one already follows: offer the candidates, apply nothing that has not been seen.

What Rooster will not do for you

• No direct YouTube upload. Rooster hands you a finished file to publish yourself.
• No template ecosystem, trend library or motion-graphics pack. If your videos are built from templates and effects, a timeline editor built for that is the better tool.
• No multicamera editing, and no automatic switching between angles.
• No title, description, thumbnail or chapter generation. Rooster gives you the transcript and the file.
• No channel management, viewer analytics or publishing schedule.
• Mac only, on Apple silicon. There is no Windows, iPad or browser version, and none is planned.
