Free MOV to MP3 converter

Choose a .mov or .mp4 file and save its sound as an MP3. The picture is left out, and sound that is not MP3 already is re-encoded to a 192 kbps MP3 on this device, so it plays in any app or site that asks for an MP3.

The converter runs entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, and your video never leaves this device.

Why turn a video into an MP3

A talk, an interview or a screen recording often matters for what is said rather than what is shown. As an MP3 it is a fraction of the size, plays on anything, and can go to a podcast host, a transcription service or a phone without the picture coming along.

Questions about converting to MP3

Is my video uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted in your browser on this device. In some browsers the sound waits in the browser's private storage until you press Save MP3, and it is deleted when you convert another file or come back to the page.
Will the quality change?
The sound in a MOV or MP4 is usually AAC, which is re-encoded to an MP3 at 192 kbps - plenty for speech and most music. Sound that is already MP3 is copied out as it is, with no change at all.
Does it work with iPhone video and screen recordings?
Yes. They are MOV or MP4 files with AAC sound, and it takes both. A recording with more than two sound channels is mixed down to stereo, the most an MP3 holds.
Can I keep the sound uncompressed instead?
Yes - the free tool to extract audio from video can save it as a WAV, which is larger but is not compressed again. It takes WebM and MKV as well as MOV and MP4.
Can it handle a long recording?
Yes. The video is read in pieces, so it does not have to fit in memory, and only the sound is written: an MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.44 MB a minute. In Chrome the file is written straight to the place you choose; in other browsers it waits in the browser's private storage until you save it. A browser with neither can only hold up to 1.00 GB.
What is kept?
Only the sound, with the title and date. The picture, location and device details are left out. An MP3 holds one sound track, so a file with more keeps the first one the browser can read, and the tool says so before it starts.
Which browsers does it work in?
One that can decode the file's sound, such as Chrome. The MP3 encoder runs as WebAssembly, which Lockdown Mode on a Mac or iPhone turns off. Where a browser cannot do either, the tool says so before it starts.

Exporting the sound from Rooster

Rooster records your screen and camera on your Mac and lets you edit the video by editing its transcript. When you only need the sound, it exports an MP3, an M4A or an uncompressed WAV of the edited project, with the level matched to -16 LUFS, the loudness podcasts are published at - all rendered on your Mac with nothing uploaded. See how audio export works, or you can try Rooster free.

This converter is built on Mediabunny 1.61.6 and its MP3 encoder, by Vanilagy and contributors, used unmodified under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The MP3 encoder is a WebAssembly build of LAME 3.100, used unmodified under the GNU Library General Public License 2.0; its source is at sourceforge.net/projects/lame.
