Transcription failed or found no speech

No speech found

The engine listened to the whole recording and heard nothing to write down. Usually the recording captured the wrong microphone, or none. Check the sound plays, and if it should have speech, record again with the right microphone chosen in the recorder.

Press Try again to transcribe again, or Start typing to write the script yourself.

Transcription didn’t finish

The reason is written underneath. Fix what it says if you can, then press Try again. The most common reasons:

  • The speech model could not be downloaded. It is a one-time download the first time you transcribe. Check your internet connection and try again. See The speech model is a one-time download.
  • A cloud service refused (only if you chose Cloud API as the Transcription provider). Rooster says which: the key was rejected, the account has no credit left, the service asked to slow down, it timed out, or it answered with something that was not a transcript - often a model name that is not a speech-to-text model. A recording can also be too long for OpenAI's own service, which takes up to 25 MB of compressed sound; Local Parakeet has no such limit.

Stopping a transcription with Stop loses nothing the project already had.

Diagnostics

When a transcription fails or hears nothing, Rooster writes down what it was doing - the engine, the model, the error and the kind of file - so the problem can be diagnosed. It does not record your transcript, your API keys, or the names and locations of your recordings. The record stays on your Mac and is sent nowhere.

To see it, choose Help > Diagnostics. It keeps the problems of the last 30 days. Press Copy to put the report on the clipboard, or Save… to save it as a file, and include it when you contact support.
