Install Rooster on your Mac

In closed beta · Not yet on sale

Rooster is in closed beta, so it is not in the Mac App Store yet and there is no public download. Testers are sent a link to a disk image when their application is accepted. If you are not a tester, you can apply for the closed beta.

Install it

  1. Open the link from your invitation and download the disk image.
  2. Open the disk image. It shows Rooster beside your Applications folder.
  3. Drag Rooster onto Applications.
  4. Open Rooster from your Applications folder. The disk image can then be ejected and thrown away.

The disk image is signed and notarised by Apple, so macOS opens Rooster without asking you to override a security warning.

Rooster runs on Macs with Apple silicon and a recent version of macOS. The system requirements page has the details.

What the first launch asks for

Nothing, at first. Rooster opens on its welcome screen without an account, a sign-in or a setup checklist.

Three things come later, the first time you need them:

  • The speech model. The first time you transcribe, Rooster downloads its speech model once. After that, transcription runs on your Mac with no connection. See Transcribe a video on your Mac.
  • Camera and microphone. macOS asks the first time you record with each. If you said no, the recorder says so and offers Open Camera settings or Open Microphone settings, which opens the right page of System Settings.
  • Screen Recording. macOS does not ask for this one. The first time you record your screen, the recorder shows Screen Recording is off and Open Screen Recording settings: switch Rooster on there, then quit and reopen Rooster.

Keep Rooster up to date

Choose Rooster > Check for Updates… to look for a new version. When there is one, Rooster offers to download and install it and then relaunches, so you never repeat the steps above.

Updating Rooster leaves your projects, recordings and exports where they are.
