Correct the transcript without changing the video

In closed beta · Not yet on sale

Transcription gets names, jargon and the odd word wrong. Correcting the transcript fixes the words and the captions made from them, and never touches the video: the length, the cuts and the picture stay exactly as they were.

Correct a few words

  1. Select the wrong words. They must be within one sentence.
  2. Press Correct in the bar over the selection, or press the C key. You can also right-click and choose Correct the transcript….
  3. Type the right words in Corrected text and press Return, or press Correct.

A corrected word is underlined. Hover over it to see what the transcript said before.

To remove words from the video rather than fix them, press Delete instead - see Edit video by editing the script.

Correct the same mistake everywhere

If the same wrong reading appears elsewhere in the script, the correction box offers a checkbox to correct the other places that read the same, and says how many there are. Tick it to fix them all in one go.

In a transcript made on your Mac, the box also offers to have new transcripts spell it your way from now on: tick the box that reads "Always spell" your words "in new transcripts". That adds the pair to your glossary; see Teach Rooster to spell names your way.

Type over the script in Correct mode

For a run of fixes, Correct mode makes the script editable like a document.

  1. Turn it on with Edit > Correct Mode, or Correct mode in the correction box or the right-click menu.
  2. Click into a sentence and type. Each sentence is saved as a correction when you move to another, or press Return.
  3. Press Done correcting, or Escape, to finish.

While Correct mode is on, Space types a space; use ⌘S to play and pause. Each edit stays inside one sentence, so you cannot type over a ¦ cut mark, a scene mark or the gap between sentences, and typing never removes media - Rooster says so if you try.

Outside Correct mode, typing in the script changes nothing: Rooster shows Typing does not change the script and points you to Correct.

Put a correction back

Select the corrected words and press Correct again. The box offers Revert to original, and Revert all when the same correction was made in several places. Undo (⌘Z) works as well.

What cannot be corrected

  • A selection across two sentences: correct one sentence at a time.
  • A script you typed yourself, rather than one transcribed from the recording: there is no transcript to correct it against, so edit the text instead.
