Change volume and add fades

Select a clip and, in the Adjust rail's Sound section, use Volume, Mute, Fade in and Fade out. To change the level of only part of your main recording, select those words in the script and use Volume in Adjust. Volume goes up to 100 percent: Rooster turns sound down, never up.
A whole clip
Select the clip - the main recording, a B-roll clip or a music clip - and open Adjust. Under Sound:
- Volume, from 0 to 100 percent.
- Mute, which silences the clip and keeps its settings for when you turn it back on.
- Fade in and Fade out, each up to five seconds, and never longer than the clip.
Each change is one step you can undo with ⌘Z. A still image has no sound, and the section says so.
Why volume stops at 100 percent
Rooster plays a clip at its recorded level or below. Making something louder than it was recorded is not something Rooster can do yet. For speech that is too quiet overall, try Match loudness to -16 LUFS when you export - see Export a video.
Only some words
To turn down part of the main recording - a cough, a loud laugh - without cutting it:
- Select those words in the script, with no clip selected on the timeline.
- In Adjust, under Sound, move Volume.
Rooster splits the main recording at the edges of the selection and sets the level of the part in between. Nothing moves in time, and one Undo takes back both the split and the level. If the words already play at more than one level, the section says so and offers Reset to 100 % first.
Music
A music clip has more sections after Sound: looping, setting its level under your narration, and ducking. Mute the whole lane silences every music clip at once. See Add background music.
Hiding is not muting
The eye in the Layers list hides a layer's picture but leaves its sound playing. To silence a clip, use Mute.
