Smooth jump cuts
Choose Enhance, then Smooth Jump Cuts…. Set how far to punch in, listen to any cut, untick the ones to leave, and press Apply. Rooster draws the picture slightly larger on every other stretch between the ticked cuts, and one undo takes it all off.
Cutting filler words, pauses and retakes from a recording leaves a jump cut at every join: the speaker's head moves a little between one frame and the next. A punch-in hides it. Draw the picture slightly larger on one side of the cut and the jump reads as a change of shot.
Punch in at the cuts
- Choose Enhance > Smooth jump cuts, or Enhance > Smooth Jump Cuts… in the menu bar.
- Set Punch in to. It starts at 110 %, which is enough to read as a new shot without the face growing noticeably.
- Rooster lists each cut between the words either side of it. Press a row's time to hear the cut with a moment either side. Untick any cut to leave as it is.
- Press Apply.
Rooster punches in on every other stretch between the ticked cuts, keeping the point 40 % down the picture still so the face stays where it was. A cut under a picture that fills the screen, or under a transition, is already hidden, so Rooster leaves it alone and says how many it skipped.
Nothing is cut and your recording is unchanged: the punch-in is how the picture is drawn. One Undo (⌘Z) takes every punch-in off.
Take the punch-ins off
Press Undo (⌘Z) straight after, or open Smooth jump cuts again, press Select none, and press the button, which now reads Remove punch-ins. Running Smooth jump cuts again after more edits rewrites the punch-ins for the cuts you have now, at the zoom they already use.
