Set a background colour or picture

Click an empty part of the canvas so nothing is selected, open Adjust, and use the Background band: press the plus to add a colour, or the picture button to add an image. The colour fills the whole project wherever nothing covers the canvas; a picture goes behind the main recording for the scene.
Wherever no picture covers the canvas, the background shows. It fills the bars a fitted clip leaves, the frame around a clip in a corner, gaps in the timeline, and the space behind you after Green Screen. With no background set, it is black.
Add a background
- Click an empty part of the canvas so nothing is selected, and open Adjust.
- In the Background band:
- press the plus (Add a background colour) and choose a colour; or
- press the picture button (Add a background picture) and choose Image… for a file, or an image the project already holds. Once there is a colour, the plus itself offers the picture.
The canvas also shows a Background chip with the current colour and picture.
Colour or picture
- The colour is for the whole project. There is one, and it fills every scene.
- A picture belongs to a scene. It goes behind the main recording as a layer of its own, at the back of the Layers list, covering the scene under the playhead. Like any layer it can be selected, trimmed, hidden or locked; drag its edges on the timeline to change when it shows.
The band says which you have and where it reaches.
Remove it
Press the bin beside the colour (Remove background) or the picture (Remove background image). Without a colour, the background goes back to black.
Layouts that need a picture
The scene layouts Side by side and Picture with camera inset put a picture behind the main recording. Add a background picture to the scene first; otherwise Rooster asks you to. See Divide a video into scenes.
