Reorder, hide and lock layers

Where layers overlap, the top layer draws in front. The Layers list is where you change that order, hide a layer, or lock it.

Find the Layers list

Click an empty part of the canvas so nothing is selected, then open Adjust. The list is under the background. It shows the layers in the scene under the playhead - main recording, B-roll and elements - with the front-most at the top. In a project with scenes it is headed with the scene's number.

Click a row to select that layer.

Change what covers what

Drag a row up or down. Or select a layer and use the Layers menu in the menu bar:

CommandKey
Bring to Front]
Bring ForwardShift-]
Send BackwardShift-[
Send to Back[

The same four are on each row's right-click menu, and on the canvas's right-click menu under Layer Order. The keys do nothing while you are typing in a text field.

The order applies to the whole project, not just the scene you are looking at.

Hide a layer

Press a row's eye. A hidden layer draws nothing but its sound still plays - to silence it, use Mute in its Sound section instead. The main recording can be hidden too.

Lock a layer

Press a row's padlock. A locked layer still draws and plays, but cannot be moved, resized, reordered, trimmed or deleted, and clicks on the canvas pass through it to what is behind. If you try, Rooster says the layer is locked and to unlock it in the Layers list.

Rename or delete

Right-click a row for Rename… and Delete. You can also rename a lane by right-clicking one of its clips on the timeline and choosing Rename Layer…. The main recording cannot be deleted.

Music and captions are not in the list; they have no picture to stack.
