Find any action or setting by name

Search for an action

Help > Search Actions… (⌘K) opens a search field near the top of the window. Type in Search actions and settings and the list narrows as you type.

  • A match can be the start of a command's name, the start of any word in it, its initials - "ssa" finds Show Safe Areas - or its letters in order. The name of a menu lists that menu's commands.
  • Each row names the menu the command lives in, such as File or File › Record, and shows its keyboard shortcut, so the next time you can go straight there.
  • The Up and Down arrow keys choose a row, and Return runs it - exactly as if you had chosen it from the menu bar. A click on a row runs it too.
  • Escape closes the list and puts you back where you were, with the caret where you left it. Pressing ⌘K again closes it too.

Every command on the menu bar is listed - all but the list of open windows and the text tools macOS adds to Edit, such as Dictation - including the ones you cannot use right now, which are greyed - for example Deselect with nothing selected. A greyed row cannot be chosen; it is there so you know the command exists and where to find it.

Open a setting

Each Settings section - Transcription, Audio, Storage, Diagnostics and Credits - is listed under Settings. Type its name, such as "audio", and press Return to open Settings on that section.

Good to know

  • The list works with no project open too: commands that need a project are greyed, and the ones that start a project, such as New Project… and Import Media…, are there to run.
  • While a sheet such as Export is open, Search Actions… is greyed, as the rest of the menu bar is.
  • While a recording is running, typing goes into the search field until you close it, so Space does not stop the recording until the list is gone.
  • Everything listed is also on the menu bar, so the list is a quicker way to a command rather than the only one.
