Allow Screen Recording for Rooster
In closed beta · Not yet on sale
macOS does not ask before an app records the screen, so the first time you try, Rooster's recorder shows Screen Recording is off. Press Open Screen Recording settings, switch Rooster on, then quit and reopen Rooster. If it is already on, remove Rooster with the minus button and add it again.
Camera and microphone access work the way you would expect: macOS asks the first time Rooster uses them. Screen Recording is different. macOS never shows a prompt for it - an app can only be switched on by you, in System Settings.
Switch Screen Recording on
- Open the recorder in Screen or Screen + Camera mode. The preview shows Screen Recording is off.
- Press Open Screen Recording settings. System Settings opens at Privacy & Security, on the screen-recording list. Trying to record is what puts Rooster in that list, so it is there now.
- Switch Rooster on.
- Quit Rooster and open it again. macOS applies the change only to an app that starts after it.
Rooster is switched on and still refused
This happens when the copy of Rooster you are running is signed differently from the one that was switched on - after installing a new build from a different source, for instance. The switch stays on but no longer matches.
- In the same list in System Settings, select Rooster and press the minus button to remove it.
- Press the plus button and add Rooster from your Applications folder again, or try recording again so it reappears, and switch it on.
- Quit and reopen Rooster.
Camera or microphone refused
If you said no when macOS asked about the camera or microphone, the recorder says Rooster needs permission and offers Open Camera settings or Open Microphone settings. Switch Rooster on there, then quit and reopen Rooster.
