Create a new project
In closed beta · Not yet on sale
Choose File, then New Project…, or press New project on the welcome screen or at the top of the sidebar. Rooster makes an Untitled Project at the top of your project list with its name ready to type, and the project waits for a file, a recording or a typed script.
A project holds one video: its recordings, its script, its edits and its captions. There are three ways to make one, and an empty project is the one to choose when you want to name it first, or write the script before you record.
Make an empty project
Do any of these:
- Choose File > New Project… (⌘N).
- Press New project on the welcome screen.
- Press New project at the top of the sidebar.
Rooster adds the project at the top of your project list, inside whichever folder the sidebar is showing, and opens it. It is called Untitled Project until you name it.
Name it
The empty project opens with its title field ready, showing Name your project. Type a name and press Return.
To rename a project later, click its title at the top of the editor. Or right-click it in the sidebar, choose Rename Project… and type the new name.
Give it something to edit
An empty project shows Add a file to start and three ways to fill it:
- Add a file. Click the dashed box to choose a video or audio file, or drag one onto it. It becomes the project's main recording and is transcribed.
- Record. Press Record to open the recorder; the take goes into this project. See Record video.
- Start typing. Press Start typing to write the script first and record against it later.
Import media in the same panel adds a file to this project, like the dashed box does.
Two shortcuts past the empty project
You do not need an empty project first:
- Import a file with File > Import Media… (⌘I) or Import media on the welcome screen. Rooster makes a new project named after the file. See Import video or audio.
- Record with File > Record Video… (⌘R) while no project is open, and the take becomes a project of its own.
Duplicate or delete a project
Right-click a project in the sidebar for Delete Project… and Duplicate Project. Rooster asks before it deletes anything.
