Add a second take to the main recording

In beta · Apply to test it free

A project's main recording can be made of several takes: a pick-up for a line you fluffed, the second half recorded tomorrow, a section from another file. Each joins the same script.

Record a take into the project

With the project open, move the playhead to where the take belongs and open the recorder. Its destination reads Insert into the script; record as usual. See Record video.

Add a file you already have

  1. Add the file to the project and click it in the Media rail.
  2. Move the playhead to where it should go.
  3. Press Add to the main recording. Its right-click menu has the same, as Add to the Main Recording at the Playhead.

You can also drag a video or audio file onto the main recording's row on the timeline; it goes in where you drop it.

Where it lands

At the playhead. If the playhead is in the middle of a clip, Rooster splits it there and moves everything after it along to make room; near a clip's edge, it goes at the edge. With the playhead at or after the end, the take is added at the end. The whole file goes in, from its start.

Its words join the script at the same place. A file you add is transcribed straight away; a take you record is transcribed while Transcribe when recording ends is on. The whole insertion is one step you can undo with ⌘Z.

When a take cannot join

In the Media rail, Add to the main recording only appears for a file that can join. Otherwise - when you record, or drop a file on the main recording's row - Rooster says why:

  • A take must be the same kind of media as the main recording: video into a video project, audio into an audio one. An image cannot be a take.
  • A project whose script was typed rather than transcribed cannot take a second recording.
  • A file already in the main recording cannot join it twice.
  • A locked main recording refuses changes until you unlock it in the Layers list.

A take you recorded that cannot join is not lost: Rooster makes a new project from it and says so.
