Descript discounts, promo codes and Black Friday in 2026
Descript has four genuine discounts. Annual billing saves between a quarter and a third (Descript says up to 35%). An education and non-profit plan costs $8 per editor a month billed annually and is the only discounted plan Descript sells. A referral link takes $17.50 off a new account's first payments. Promo codes work once, on a new account's first upgrade. Descript sells no lifetime deal, and had announced no Black Friday offer for 2026 when we checked on 31 October.
Coupon sites list dozens of "Descript promo codes". Most of them are expired, referral links in disguise, or not codes at all. This post sets out what Descript itself offers, with every figure read from Descript's own pricing page and help centre on 31 October 2026, so you can tell a real saving from a listing. What the plans cost before any discount is in our Descript pricing breakdown.
Annual billing: the discount everyone gets
Descript's pricing page shows each plan at two prices, and describes the gap as "saving up to 35% over monthly plan":
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Hobbyist | $16 per person a month | $24 |
| Creator | $24 per person a month | $35 |
| Business | $50 per person a month | $65 |
The saving is real, and it is also a commitment. Descript's refund policy allows a refund on a plan only within 48 hours of the invoice, and never prorates unused time - so an annual plan you stop using in month three is paid for to month twelve. Take the annual price when you are sure your media minutes and AI credits will cover a typical month. If you are not, the Descript cost calculator works out which plan your own hours need.
The education and non-profit plan
Students, educators and non-profits can apply for Descript's EDU/NFP plan. Its help article prices it at $12 per editor a month paid monthly, or $8 paid annually, with every feature of the Hobbyist plan - Hobbyist's meters included - and up to three editor seats per Drive. The same article is clear that there is nothing else: "The EDU/NFP subscription is the only Descript plan available at a discounted rate."
To get it:
- Create a free Descript account with your school or organisation email address.
- Add a payment method.
- Submit the application form linked from the help article and the pricing page's FAQ.
- Once you are approved, open Plan, click Change plan and choose EDU/NFP from the dropdown.
Referral links
Paying Descript users get a referral link, and that is where most "coupon" discounts come from. Descript's referral help says a brand-new user who signs up through one gets $17.50 off a month for the first two months of a monthly Creator or Business plan - "the same dollar amount as 50% off Creator" - or a one-time $17.50 off an annual Creator or Business plan. The person who shared the link earns up to $20 in cash.
Descript's own rules say referral links "can't be shared on public deal-sharing or coupon platforms". If a coupon site offers a code worth exactly $17.50, it is probably someone's referral link, posted where Descript asks people not to post it. Ask a friend who pays for Descript instead.
Promo codes
Descript's checkout does take promo codes, and its promo-code help sets four rules:
- A code can be used only once.
- It applies only to a new account upgrading from Free to a paid plan.
- One code per purchase.
- Some codes expire.
So an existing subscriber cannot use a promo code to lower a renewal, and a code from a coupon site helps only on a first upgrade, if it has not expired. Descript's affiliate help adds that affiliates are not given discount codes, so a code on an affiliate's page is not a special one.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Descript publishes no Black Friday offer on its own pages, and had announced none for 2026 when we checked on 31 October. For 2025, deal sites reported an offer of bonus usage rather than a price cut: extra AI credits and media hours for people who bought or switched to an annual Creator or Business plan before 1 December 2025. The sites disagree on the amounts, and we could not confirm the offer on Descript's own pages, so treat it as a sign of the shape a Black Friday deal from Descript takes - more allowance on an annual plan - rather than a promise that the same deal will return.
If a 2026 offer appears, it is worth reading the same way: bonus credits and minutes buy more of the meter, and they run out like the rest of it.
Lifetime deals and free trials
There is no Descript lifetime deal. Descript sells monthly and annual subscriptions only, and we found no lifetime or one-time offer from Descript or on AppSumo. A "Descript lifetime deal" listing is a different product or an old page.
There is no free trial of a paid plan either. Descript's pricing FAQ points to the free plan instead, which allows 60 media minutes a month, a one-time grant of 100 AI credits and 720p exports.
The discount nobody lists: no meter at all
Every Descript discount lowers the price of the same metered plan. The education plan is Hobbyist's allowance for less money; the 2025 Black Friday offer deal sites reported was more allowance on an annual plan; a referral is two cheaper months. None of them changes the reason the bill is hard to predict: media minutes and AI credits run out at the end of a busy month, and unused credits do not roll over.
We make Rooster, a Mac video editor that does Descript's record, transcribe and cut loop on your own Mac, so we declare that interest when we say this: the other way to pay less is software with nothing to meter. Rooster transcribes and cleans up on the machine you already own, so there are no media minutes or AI credits to buy, and it is sold as a subscription or as a lifetime licence bought with one payment, after a free trial of the whole application. It is Mac-only and does not record remote guests or share projects with a team; if you need those, Descript's annual price is the discount to take. Rooster vs Descript sets the two side by side, and the best Descript alternatives ranks the rest of the field by the job you need done.
Frequently asked questions
Does Descript have a student discount?
Yes. Students, educators and non-profits can apply for the EDU/NFP plan, at $12 per editor a month paid monthly or $8 paid annually, with the Hobbyist plan's features and up to three editor seats. You apply with a school or organisation email address and switch plans once approved.
Can I use a Descript promo code on my renewal?
No. Descript's help centre says promo codes apply only to a new account upgrading from Free to a paid plan, once, and one per purchase.
Will Descript have a Black Friday sale in 2026?
Descript had not announced one on 31 October 2026. In 2025, deal sites reported bonus AI credits and media hours on annual Creator and Business plans rather than a price cut; Descript's own pages did not carry it.
Is there a Descript lifetime deal?
No. Descript sells monthly and annual subscriptions only, and we found no lifetime offer from Descript or on AppSumo.
What is the cheapest way to use Descript?
The free plan, if 60 media minutes a month and 720p exports are enough. After that, the EDU/NFP plan if you qualify, at $8 per editor a month billed annually, and otherwise Hobbyist at $16 a month billed annually.
Every price, discount and rule in this post was read from Descript's pricing page and its help-centre articles on billing, refunds, the EDU/NFP plan, referrals, affiliates and promo codes on 31 October 2026. The 2025 Black Friday offer is as reported by third-party deal sites, which disagree on its amounts. If Descript has changed anything since, its own pages win.
