Generate B-roll with your own fal.ai key

In beta · Apply to test it free

When you need a cutaway you do not have - a city at dusk, hands on a keyboard - Rooster can ask fal.ai to generate a short clip from a description. You use your own fal.ai account and key; Rooster meters nothing and adds nothing to the price.

Add your key once

  1. Get a key from fal.ai - Get a fal.ai key in Settings opens the page.
  2. Open Settings and choose B-roll.
  3. Paste it into fal.ai API key and press Save key in Keychain.
  4. Press Test key to check fal.ai accepts it. Testing generates nothing.

The key is kept in macOS Keychain. To remove it, clear the field and save again.

Generate a clip

  1. Move the playhead to where the clip should go.
  2. In the Media rail, press Generate.
  3. Under Prompt, describe the shot: subject, setting, camera movement.
  4. Under Clip, choose the Model, the length and the Resolution. The aspect ratio is the model's nearest shape to your project's canvas.
  5. Read the cost estimate: fal.ai's rate for that model, length and size as published on the date it shows, billed to your account. It is an estimate, not a quote, and fal.ai may have changed its prices since.
  6. Press Generate, or Command-Return.

The toolbar shows progress - sent, queued, generating, downloading - with Cancel. One clip is generated at a time.

Where it goes

The clip is downloaded to your Mac, added to the project's media, and placed on the B-roll lane at the playhead where you pressed Generate. If the lane has no room there, it stays in the Media rail and Rooster says so; place it from there.

Generated clips are kept in Rooster's own folder, under Generated B-roll in Settings > Storage.

What leaves your Mac

Only your prompt and the clip settings - model, length, aspect ratio and resolution - go to fal.ai, with your key. Your recording, transcript and project stay on your Mac.

If it fails

Rooster says why: the key was rejected, the account is out of credit, fal.ai refused the prompt (try rewording it), or it could not be reached or took too long.
